Compton, Albert rule in Belgium

Katie Compton (Planet Bike) continued her winning ways on Sunday as the third round of the Superprestige series came to Gavere, Belgium.

Compton finished nearly a minute ahead of Holland’s Marianne Vos, whose countrywoman Daphny van den Brand crossed third at 1:43.

Vos and Van den Brand got off to fast starts, but Compton quickly latched onto them and then went away on her own on the second of five laps.

“I love mud and technically difficult courses,” Compton said. “And I had one of my best days this season. It’s proof that my condition is very good.”

In men’s racing, world champion Niels Albert (BKCP-Powerplus) took the win over Sven Nys (Landbouwkrediet-Colnago) by 36 seconds, with Zdenek Stybar (Telenet-Fidea) third at 0:43.

American Jonathan Page (Planet Bike) finished 21st at 6:38.

Nys had a poor start but had chased his way up to Albert only to puncture on a stone in the next-to-last lap, a self-described "silly mistake" that foiled his bid to win a 50th Superprestige.

Albert, who has won two of the three Superprestige outings so far this season, leads the series with 44 points. Nys sits second with 42 and Stybar third with 40.
