Walter Godefroot hopes each year for a new victory from Jan Ullrich. But the German superstar came out of the winter with several excess kiloson him., then a knee injury kept him out of action during the spring, andfinally forced him to scratch from the Tour altogether. Luckily, DeutscheTelekom is made up of more than just Ullrich. The eternal Erik Zabel willbe aiming for a seventh green jersey, and Andreas Klöden could finallycome into his own, while Alex Vinokourov and the newly arrived American,Bobby Julich, will go after spots in the general classification. The ambitionsof the men in pink are always very high.TEAM WINS2001

Rudy Pevenage, manager:
“Our plan was to defeat Lance Armstrong, but with Jan Ullrich not startingbecause of his injured knee, our priorities have changed. We may be ableto play on several fronts — stage wins, green jersey and even the GC —as we have another asset in the person of Bobby Julich. Vinokourov willalso have greater responsibilities, and I might as well say that the firsthalf of this Tour is made for Erik Zabel, green jersey of the 2001 Tour.”
