All behind Virenque
The long-standing Dutch squad, TVM, became Farm Frites in 2000,then Farm Frites joined with Domo last year to form this new Belgian teamunder the leadreship of Patrick Lefévère. Lefévèreleft the mythical Mapei formation to build the team of his dreams: a fierygroup for the classics, but also for the stage races, with Axel Merckxand Richard Virenque. Johan Museeuw is riding his final season — and whata season, with a fantastic victory in Paris-Roubaix! The team had hopedto count on the return of Frank Vandenbroucke, but a new doping scandalcaused him to be sacked by Lefévère. So, at this 2002 Tour, besides stage win opportunities for two-time U.S. champion Fred Rodriguez,Domo will be counting most of all on its rejuvenated French climber, Virenque. The French fans are waiting for him on the mountaintops.

Patrick Lefévère, manager:
"First of all, we’re going to aim for the best climber’s jersey withRichard Virenque, and through him also one or several stage victories.Certainly, we will have to manage the first section of this rather particularTour: a team time trial, then the individual, just before the transfersouth and the first climbs of the Pyrénées. It’s enough tosay that we don’t want to make mistakes the first week or expend too muchenergy in the long stages, where, every day, breakaways can take off froma distance. Jeroen Blijlevens and Servais Knaven will try to win some sprints. As for the rest, the team will have to be united around Virenque in themountains, but also around Merckx. Axel can do better than last year, whenhe finished in 22nd place. We will have a good team at the start of thisTour, with lofty intentions."
