Frigo bears watching
This Italian team, which has had trouble holding on to its best riders,cannot hope to stand out in the Tour de France this year. But the groupstill has some impressive racers and can hope for a few stage wins. TacconiSport has rehabilitated a black sheep, Dario Frigo, expelled from the Girolast year for drug possession. What kind of spirits will he be in thisyear? Is he the great racer he is proclaimed to be? His performance willbe one of the curiosities of the 2002 Tour. On a different note, bets canbe placed particularly on Gianluca Bortolami and Andrej Hauptman, thirdat the 2001 world’s, and on Minali for the sprint finishes.

"We are going to go for stage victories and, why not, the general classification,with Hauptman, Frigo and Klemencic. I think that we will have a completegroup, even though this Tour seems very demanding. Some think that nothingwill happen in the first section in the north, and then there will be racein the Pyrénées and Alps. Myself, I think we will all haveto be vigilant everywhere, especially in the individual time trial beforethe rest day at Bordeaux. The gaps may already be established, and thegroup that is out of sync risks being dropped along the way. We are countingon the sprints, with Minali, and why not the green jersey too, which Zabelhas worn for six years now. In short, we will be very motivated, becauseit’s always an honor to be at the Tour."
