Euskaltel's Iban Mayo held off a bunch of favorites including Lance Armstrong to win the prologue time trial of the Dauphine Libere race in Villard-De-Lans, France on Sunday.

Mayo, one of the up and coming riders from Spain, dons the race leader's jersey after the short 5.1km ride.

The Dauphine, long regarded as a prime warm-up for the Tour de France, ends next Sunday.

Rogers takes over in Germany
Australian Michael Rogers, riding for Quick Step, clawed back over 40 seconds in arrears in the 40.7-kilometer sixth stage time trial in Bretten on Sunday to take the Tour of Germany overall lead. Rogers, fresh from winning the Tour of Belgium thanks mainly to his second place in the time trial on the penultimate day last month, edged ONCE's Portuguese rider Jose Azevedo for the race leader's white jersey.

Azevedo came seventh on the stage at just over two minutes adrift.

The 23-year-old Aussie, the winner of last year's Tour Down Under, now has a 1min 19sec lead over Azevedo ahead of Monday's final stage.

Azevedo, 29, had only taken possession of the jersey on Saturday having won the hilly fifth stage in which Rogers had placed fifth at 32 seconds to sit fifth at 42 seconds adrift in the overall standings.

However the up and coming Aussie showed plenty in shoving a host of better-known time trial stars down the standings to virtually assure overall victory.

Rogers timed 51:36 over the 40.7km course to leave former world time trial champion and reigning Olympic champion Jan Ullrich, riding for Bianchi, well down in second place at 1:10 back.

In third was Kazakh rider Alexandre Vinokourov (Telekom) at 1:13, followed by a number of time trial specialists including Germany's Michael Rich and Uwe Peschel and Hungarian Laszlo Bodrogi.

The Tour of Germany ends Monday with the 173.2km seventh stage between Bad Duerkheim and Sarrebrucken.
