Health Net - Maxxis' Rory Sutherland won his second prologue of the 2008 National Racing Calendar on Thursday, setting a course record at the Joe Martin Stage Race's opening Devil's Den Time Trial.
The Australian storming through uphill 2 1/2-mile race in 8:14, ten seconds ahead of Anthony
Colby (Colavita-Sutter Home).
Sutherland also won the prologue at the Redlands Bicycle Classic earlier this spring.
“The course was very similar in profile to the Redlands prologue,” Sutherland said. “It’s more of a power climber’s course rather than a pure climber’s. It’s a good course that suits me well. I had a good warm up and felt good.”
Third place went to Noland Froese of THF Racing.
Sutherland said the team will look to defend his leaders jersey and grab some stage wins during the Joe Martin Stage Race, which concludes Sunday.
In the women's race, Mackenzie Woodring (Colavita - Sutter Home) of Grand Rapids, Michigan, nipped New Zealander Catherine Cheatly (Cheerwine Cycling) by just one second.
Cheerwine's Marisa Asplund-Owens was third, another three seconds back.
