Police raid Portuguese team
Portuguese police say they found evidence of widespread doping after raids Monday on LA-MSS, a continental team that includes several Operación Puerto “refugees,” wire services reported Tuesday.
Police didn’t officially reveal the name of the team, but the Portuguese sport daily, A Bola, reported in its Tuesday edition that Portuguese authorities visited the residences of riders on the LA-MSS team.
Authorities said the investigation, which was conducted under the national anti-doping council and the national anti-corruption bureau, is ongoing.
Police found drugs, medicines and equipment to perform autologous and homologous blood transfusions in raids on offices and residences used by the team that includes such Spanish riders as Tino Zaballa and Angel Vicioso who were linked to the notorious Puerto doping investigation in 2006.
“The purpose of the raid was the detention of any cases associated with illicit behavior likely to distort the truth in sport or damage the health of athletes through the administration of doping substances,” a police report said.
LA-MSS is one of Portugal’s largest and most successful teams and recently won at the Subida de Naranco and the Vuelta a Asturias in Spain.
The news comes following the death of Portuguese sprinter Bruno Neves, who died May 11 after falling in the GP de Amarante.
