Tonkov takes Alcobendas
Russian veteran Pavel Tonkov (LPR) wrapped up the overall victory in the Clásica de Alcobendas after holding off challenges in the two-day finale in the suburbs north of Madrid.
Tonkov won Saturday’s opening up the Cat. 1 Puerto de Navacerrada and kept the peloton at bay on Sunday. Luis León Sánchez (Liberty Seguros) repeated his victory from a year ago in the afternoon time trial after a return to racing from an injury during the spring classics while David Herrero (Euskaltel Euskadi) took a bunch sprint in the morning sector.
Herrero’s win breaks the losing streak plaguing the Basque team, which had only won once since last June and had gone winless entirely in 2005. Spanish team Saunier Duval thus remains the only ProTour without a victory this season.
Ljungskog takes win at Madrid World Cup
Susanne Ljungskog won Sunday´s GP Castilla y Leon in northern Spain, taking Judith Arndt to the line. Tatiana Guderzo came through third to complete the podium in the sixth leg of the 2005 World Cup series.
With Fleche Wallone winner Nicole Cooke racing mountain bikes in Madrid ("the World Cup isn't my goal this year," she said), Ljungskog rode well to take the victory ahead of Arndt, winner of the three-day Castilla y Leon warmup race earlier this week.
Aussie Oenone Wood finished fifth, good enough to retain the overall World Cup leader´s jersey.
