Luxembourg officials expand Schleck query
Luxembourg’s anti-doping officials have expanded their inquiry into Frank Schleck, who admitted last week he transferred nearly 7000 euros in March 2006 into an account belonging to Eufemiano Fuentes, the alleged ringleader of the Operación Puerto doping ring.
Schleck, who was provisionally suspended by his Team CSC-Saxo Bank team, met with Luxembourg officials last week, but his explanations weren’t enough to end the matter there.
“It has been decided to carry out an additional investigation at different levels,” the Luxembourg Anti-Doping Agency (ALAD) said in a statement on its webpage.
Officials did not offer more details of what would happen next, however.
“Dr. Fuentes is known in sporting circle for doping treatments. He was the subject of an investigation in Spain. German authorities are of the opinion that it might be indicate a possible doping violation by Frank Schleck,” the statement read.
Ivan Basso, Jörg Jaksche and Michele Scarponi are the only riders to serve bans among the alleged 50-plus names in the Puerto dossier. Giampaolo Caruso, another Italian rider, is currently appealing a two-ban to the Court of Arbitration of Sport.
