Contador brushes off spill; poised to meet Armstrong

Alberto Contador brushed off a minor crash in a Sunday criterium honoring compatriot Joan Llaneras just as he’s poised to join Lance Armstrong at an Astana team camp early next month.

The Giro-Vuelta double champion hit the deck during the ACP Criterium on Sunday and was showing some minor cuts and scrapes as a result.

“I’m fine, I have some superficial scrapes on my shoulder and face. In the end, it wasn’t as bad as I thought,” Contador told reporters. “The impact was hard despite going at a slow speed. It was no big deal.”

Contador, 26, received yet another honor in what’s been a year full of galas since becoming just the fifth man in cycling history to win all three grand tours. He was awarded the “Seven Star” award as the best sportsman in the Madrid region.

The Spanish climber, meanwhile, will travel to Spain’s Tenerife island in early December where he will meet new teammate Armstrong face-to-face for the first time since the seven-time Tour champ announced his return to competition.

Along with their Astana teammates and staff, Armstrong and Contador will converge in the Canary Islands in the team’s first major meeting ahead of the 2009 season for a short training camp.

“I face the season with enthusiasm with the principal objective, like always, on the Tour de France,” the 2007 Tour winner told journalists. “This year I am going to count on a great team, and in this sense, I am calm. The fact to have won three big tours doesn’t diminish my motivation and I will always try to win. Every season has its highlights.”
