Christophe Moreau endured a forgettable 2008 season, suffering through a winless season that collapsed when he abandoned in the seventh stage of the Tour de France without making much of an impact.
Moreau -- the last active rider from the “Festina 9” from the Festina Affaire of the 1998 Tour de France – wants to have at least one more strong performance before hanging up the cleats for good.
“After 15 years as a professional, it’s not a question of money,” Moreau told L’Equipe. “I haven’t had a bad career, I could stop, but I can still be effective. I made a good Paris-Nice and the Route du Sud (second) was beautiful. I have the physical resources and motivation. I want to end my career on a beautiful note. If the season is a beautiful one, it would be an ideal year to hang it up.”
The 37-year-old hopes to make amends with one more season with Agritubel following his winless 2008 campaign.
The French continental team picked up Moreau after his successful 2007 with Ag2r, which included overall victory at the Dauphiné Libéré.
For 2009, Moreau is aiming to see a return to form, but isn’t making any radical changes. Rather than mix things up, the veteran is sticking with what he knows works best.
“I will be in the Ardennes, Flèche and Liège, plus the Catalunya tour, the Dauphiné and, of course, the Tour de France. Until July, nothing will change,” he said. “. In the stage races, I will try to make the first blow, make some beautiful races and compete with panache.”
Moreau said he’s already begun his winter training regime, including some biathlons, to prepare for the team’s early season training camps after the holidays.
