Before his diagnosis, Cunego struggled through the Giro.
Before his diagnosis, Cunego struggled through the Giro.

Former world number one Damiano Cunego will take part in Saturday's Clasica San Sebastian, this season's 20th ProTour race, his Lampre team confirmed Thursday.

The 23-year-old Italian was forced to miss several weeks of the season after being diagnosed with the debilitating Epstein-Barr (EBV) virus.

But he returned to action in July and performed well in this week's Fred Mengoni trophy and the Castelfidardo Grand Prix.

Lampre coach Giuseppe Martinelli predicted Cunego would perform well in Spain.

"Damiano has moved very well in the last two races where he was always near the front and we are confident for his next outings," he said.

Cunego has 18 career titles to his name, including the overall at the 2004 Giro d'Italia.

Discovery signs Martinez
The Discovery Channel team announced its first signing for the 2006 cycling season, Spaniard Egoi Martinez, on Thursday.

Currently a member of the Euskaltel team, Martinez, 27, won the prestigious Tour de l'Avenir in 2003 and has finished in the top 50 in the last two Tours de France. Martinez signed to a two-year agreement.

"He's a complete rider," said Discovery manager Johan Bruyneel. "I have been following his progress for a while and I think he will fit in very well within our team structure. He's the type of rider we need - he can climb and time trial well - and I'm happy we are able to bring him to the team."

A professional since 2002, Martinez followed up a 10th place finish in the Tour de l'Avenir that season with a victory the next. Midway through the '03 race, strong performances in back to back stages took Martinez from 13th place, 47 seconds back, into the race lead by 1:50, eventually winning by 2:02.

In 2004, Martinez finished 41st in his first Tour de France highlighted by a third place effort in stage 11. Also that season, he finished fourth overall at the Languedoc-Roussillon. This season, Martinez was fourth at the GP Miguel Indurain and 48th at the Tour de France.

"I've seen some flashes on certain occasions and I believe he can become a solid rider," Bruyneel said. "He is definitely a Tour caliber rider."
