The Phonak team announced Wednesday that Fabrizio Guidi has tested positivefor an as-of-yet-undisclosed substance.
Phonak general manager John Lelangue said Guidi's A-sample has comeback positive and the 33-year-old rider has been immediately suspendedpending the outcome of follow-up tests of a B-sample. The suspension isin keeping with current UCI policy. Guidi was competing in the Tour of Germany, although the team has not disclosed when and at which event the original sample was taken from the Italian rider.
Phonak has undergone major management changes since last season's spateof positive doping tests in which former world champion Oscar Camenzindtested positive for EPO and Olympic time trial gold medalist Tyler Hamiltonand teammate Santiago Perez tested positive for homologous blood doping.
Camenzind promptly retired at the news of his positive test, while Hamiltonand Perez are appealing their recent two-year suspensions to the InternationalCourt of Arbitration for Sport. Hamilton's CAS hearing is tentatively scheduledfor Denver, Colorado, on September 6.
Phonak was initially denied ProTour status, but CAS ruled that it wouldbe inappropriate to penalize the team for cases still under appeal. Nonetheless, the team fired then-manager Urs Freuler and director Alvaro Pino, hiring Lelangue and appointing former Coast director Juan Fernandez as the Swiss team's new director sportif.
