Biography

Hamilton entered collegiate cycling at the age of 18 after a broken back cut short his competitive downhill skiing career. After rising through the amateur ranks, he became a professional cyclist in 1995 and began riding for the Montgomery Bell team, which became the U.S. Postal Service team in 1996. Following his Olympic gold medal in the individual time trial at the Athens Games in 2004, Hamilton tested positive for homologous blood doping at the Vuelta a España. He returned to competition in 2007 as a member of the Tinkoff Credit Systems squad. Contract disputes limited his race participation and the rider from Marblehead, Massachusetts has signed with Rock Racing for 2008.
