Biography

No one had heard much about Vandenbergh before the inaugural Tour of Ireland in August 2007. Despite a solid amateur career in the cutthroat Belgian ranks, he seemed overlooked on the Unibet.com team. He snuck into the winning breakaway in the Irish tour’s opening stage. He timed an attack perfect over the steep St. Patrick’s hill above Cork and rode away with the leader’s jersey. He showed his grace beyond his years by not becoming rattled despite incessant attacks from Team CSC for the rest of the week. Despite his big frame, Vandenbergh dreams of becoming a classics specialist and should get more chances at Ag2r.
