What happens when excessively wealthy sheiks decide they want to promote tourism? Put on a bike race, what else? That's what happened in 2002 when tourism officials from oil-rich Qatar approached the Tour de France about organizing a world-class bike race. Flash-forward nearly a decade and the Tour of Qatar is still going strong with its eighth edition in 2008. Known for its fast, flat and windy stages past barren sand dunes and luxurious skyscrapers, classics-bound riders love to kick-start their seasons with the short, sprint-friendly stages.
