Dauphiné Libéré
The eight-stage race in and around the French Alps is a favorite for riders heading to the Tour de France. Since its start in 1947, the race has grown in importance as racers such as Miguel Indurain and Lance Armstrong used it as a springboard to the Tour. Summer weather and such climbs as Mont Ventoux and the Col du Galibier help hone the form for Tour-bound contenders. Four Americans — Greg Lemond, Tyler Hamilton, Armstrong and Levi Leipheimer — have won the race.
